Assessments at Somerset Academy Philadelphia

Assessing Somerset Academy Children

Our assessment of young children is play-based and observes the natural flow of the day. At Somerset Academy, we gather authentic assessments every day to document experiences and chart learning over time. Additionally, we recognize that each child is unique and develops at his or her own pace. Our lesson plans clearly identify which skills are integrated within a given learning activity so that we can observe a child’s use of the identified skill. Assessments are shared with parents/guardians through the use of a Child Portfolio and a Child’s Report of Skills.

Assessing the Somerset Academy Environment

The Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS) authored by Yash Bhagwanji, is a tool used by Somerset Academy to provide a collaborative tool to discuss early childhood environmental education program goals, consider strengths and areas in need of improvement, and chart a future direction for development. It is a formative evaluation tool designed to assist programs in improving their environmental education curriculum.
